Dear Dan, By coincidence in a xmas greeting today, from David Walker:.... "I am not giving up on Bombay - found that Captain Mackintosh, who carried cargoes for Forbes and Co, was born in Strathdon and died in China leaving good money to his mother in Strathdon ".... I suppose it is a silly question to throw at you, but maybe you have some theories?....Do you think that the women these men married KNEW AND ENCOURAGED? what their husbands were doing ( in busines)...or was the match just made by their fathers to only intensify business interests.? Cheers P. See at: http://www.talesofoldchina.com/shanghai/library/fortune/t-fortune2.htm - Inglis/Willis family tree per Iseke per Brinds sends lists cited qv has Hodson list, being, Major V. C. P. Hodson, "Some families with a long East India Connection", The Genealogists' Magazine, UK, issues March, June, September, December, 1932/December 1933. Part of the Hodson introduction reads: "Some people will tell you that if there were but a single loaf of bread in all India it would be divided equally between the Plowdens, the Trevors, the Beadons, and the Rivett-Carnacs. That is only one way of saying that certain families served India generation after generation". Thus wrote Kipling in 'The Tomb of his Ancestors', and he might, with equal justice, have included in his list the Colvins, the Prinseps, the Thackerays,
the Bechers, the Stracheys..." - and later when finishing he mentions more names which could be added, Anderson, Barlow, Boddam, Bracken, Brooke, Bushby, Cadell of Cockenzie, Chase, Davis, Farquharson, Fendall, Golding, Harington, Harrison, Lewin, Malet, Master, Metcalfe, Millett, Oakes, Oldfield, Oldham, Ommanney, Robinson, Rumbold, Sewell, Stonhouse, Thackeray, Travers. Hodson.
She has two children. Per Iseke tree. Per Patricia Iseke in email and ordinary mail. Patricia Iseke, 103 Bassett Road, Remuera, Aukland 5, New Zealand. Phone: 64 9 520 4371. email to: pat.iseke@xtra.co.nz

On 28-8-2002 she gives me permission to go ahead and write on Forbes and Co of Bomay, and says, But to return to the Forbes lot...I agree that Money-Wigram need to be introduced, but you know that we have had no luck at all, re getting any info out of the Money (present day) family ..sure they did lose all their records in theBlitz, 2nd world war, but....My personal opinion is that they are really not willing to 'look' for anything that might blot their family image. I also am now quite convinced that there are probably a good few documents of historical research value, still tied up in Archives in India..(Bombay ?)..Remember all that stuff that we found about Roger de Faria( out of Goa)? The problem is to get at it, the archives I mean.......fancy a trip to India?!!! Mr Mehra of Forbes present day seems to have given all he(wants) to give us,

Subject: Further info on the willis family.

Hi Dan, This also may interest you esp. the reference to British levant ?!!! This came to me from the Debretts researcher, via Nigel Wllis in Jo'burg... Thought it is quite apt since your gov. general named Hollingworth is in the news !!! Also I find in the Family tree sent to me from England that there IS some relationship between Richard Legge W and Richard Augustus W...!!!? Just speaking more on my earlier e/m to you, you can well imagine how Richard Willis Partner of Forbes, got his "foot in the door"..not only with his relation Inglis being original founder of Forbes, but also his mother's father ( = his g'father,Murdoch Brown) being a merchant on the Malabar coast and a probable mate of Roger de Fario etc. !!! Richard Legge Willis married Charlotte Hollingworth on 12 Jun 1778 at Fort St George Madras, and my most recent research has been to attempt to link these two Richards. We know that Richard Legge was the son of another Richard Willis, who died in 1780 (and whose will I have traced, as I mentioned in my earlier e-mail). This eldest Richard was a Deputy Governor of the Levant Company. He was born ca 1723/4 in Cumberland, England. I await your further news with anticipation, since we may be close to solving a difficult problem ................end quote....... cheers P.

Hi Dan me again...correction on my letter to you 9/5... Below: General Richard Augustus Willis, b. Constantinople., 1778......married at St. Mary's Church, Fort St. George, Madras 10 March 1809,, AGNES BROWN ...Daughter of MURDOCK BROWN...they say Governor of Bombay, but I am not sure at all, this is correct.... is incorrect, my error. They married at Calicut( ie not Madras)...and I have since found on google, that there are records of Murdoch Brown at: ..
