He continued to manage the biz from 1794 when Henry Hope returned to England. This man is elected one of the eight statesmen of Holland. He left a large fortune to his family. His own entry in DNB. There is a problem with his mother, as one version is that she is Miss Haddington as given, another in DNB for her son Sir David that she was Lady Christian Hamilton; confusing information that one Dalrymple's mother was a daughter of Thomas, Sixth earl of Haddington. See DNB, he became an EICo writer at age 15, sailed from England in 1752, arrived Madras May 1753, and lanquished, till he found a mentor, Mr Pigot, later Lord Pigot, in Oct 1754, and Dalrymple moved upwards, he was at Madras with the seige of Madras Dec 1758 to Feb 1769, by Lally, when he then went exploring the Islands, Malacca etc, in EICo ship Winchelsea commanded by a brother of Lord Howe, Mr Thomas Howe. Dalrymple effected a commercial treaty with Sultan of Sulu, and was then given a small ship London to trade with Sulu. He went to Canton in 1764, and then to England where the directors were cool to his plans, for a trading establishment at Balambangan by 1771. He had become interested in hydrography, vied with Cook to go into the Pacific. In 1775 he returned to Madras then back home to be EICo hydrographer, position he was dismissed from in 1808 when he died broken-hearted. See Clodd on Light and Penang, p. 53. FRS in 1765.
