This file is a holding file for "snippet lists" of sometimes random listings of merchant names grouped in quite disparate and/or unconnected timeframes. Generally grouped by date, and/or region, the lists may in time prompt further comment or research, in which case, they will be deleted from this file and placed elsewhere. For the time being, as lists, they will simply rest here, given in a variety of chronology, mostly uncommented.

1795, - See A. Dickinson, Falklands sealing, pp. 63-65 - re Thomas Chapman in London, T. Chapman, Separating the Wool or Fur from Skins, Patent No. 2317, 1799. In 1795, an employee of Thomas Chapman, a skinner and trunkmaker from Bermondsey in east London, found a way to take the guard hairs from seal fur. Chapman experimented, and unwisely sought the financial aid of other merchants. He was driven to bankruptcy and despite his patent, had to resort to litigation, unsuccessfully, his employees being poached. He appealed unsuccessfully for financial redress to the House of Lords in 1810. But Chapman's invention revolutionized the British hat industry, and somewhat replaced the market for fur seal skins. But some of the London market was now served by the indigenous sealing industry which began around NSW from 1792.

On Bristol, from 1497

Follows a list derived from article, Evan Jones (University of Bristol), 'The Matthew of Bristol and the Financiers of John Cabot's 1497 Voyage to North America', English Historical Review, Vol. CXXI, No. 492, 2006., pp. 778-793. Some of the merchants backing Cabot's adventure included: Bristol merchant John Day (aka Hugh Say) wrote a letter to "Grand Admiral of Spain", Christopher Columbus, about Cabot's voyage on Matthew. Letters Patent (licence) for the voyage from Henry VIII. Participation of Bristol merchants Robert Thorne and Hugh Elyot have been claimed as involved but matters not yet proved conclusively. Possibly, William Clerk of London.

Known merchants of Bristol (1497-1513) not necessarily connected with Cabot, named in Jones' article, include: Hugh Eliet (sic), Edmund Griffeths, Richard Hobie, Robert Barrero, John Shipman (at times with John Ware), William Jeffereis (sic), Humphrey Brown, Roger Dawes, William Hurste, John Grene (sic), John Meysam, Thomas Hawkens (sic), William Thorne, John Edee (sic), William Aphowell, John Jansie, Robert Rowlowe, John Qwirke, Thomas Badcok (sic), Thomas Aphowell, William Estbie, John Messam, Martyn Pollard, John Collas, Nicholas Browne, William Shipman, Robert Buntre, Thomas Dale, John Hall, William Geffreys (sic), John Graunte, William Lane, John Spacheford, Robert Butre, John Drews, John Messan, Humphrey Hosgrove.
