Descendants of Wilberforce Progenitor 2013-30530

Fifth Generation

7. Abolitonist, Clapham Sect, AACo investor Wilberforce William-5722 (Robert Russia merchant, of Hull , William , Samuel , Progenitor 2013 ) was born in 1759 in Hull,Abolitionist. He died in 1833.

http update on Wrangham. He is friends with William Cookson, uncle of Wordsworth, and the brother Edward of Fletcher Christian. Cf., John Pollock, Wilberforce. London, Constable, 1977. Christie, non-elite MPs, p. 85, for his sister married to Bird. See Wilberforce of Markington. Burke's P&B for Inge-Innes-Lilingston of Thorpe Constantine. Burke's Landed Gentry for Wilberforce of Markington. Namier/Brooke, Vol. 3, p. 636. He had close links with John Thornton and his sons Samuel and Henry who were by T's second wife, a Hull woman. Smiths the Bankers, p. 123. Pemberton London Connection, p. 389. now can put a note in BC reaction from 2-7-2004 re the following- Dear Dan, My colleague, Kevin Belmonte, has emailed to say how much he appreciates your kind help. He writes: "Hannah Wilberforce was a half sister of John Thornton (see Pollock's Wilberforce for refs under Mrs. William Wilberforce--aunt to WW anti-slave trader). Now, as to Dan's passage which reads as follows: "But just as mysteriously, there arose in this sort of documentation the name Wilberforce - "Mr Wilberforce", with no initial. Cf., for 1786, Lewisham Land Tax Records, PT86/527/7 - where Lord Dartmouth let to: Duncan Campbell (as above), John Turnbull, Robert Bell and John Turnbull, and to Mr Wilberforce." This is almost certainly a reference to William Wilberforce (anti-slave trader). How do I know? Well, Uncle Wilberforce (Hannah's husband) was dead by this time, and there were no other Wilberforces who would have had a connection to Lord Dartmouth (a dear friend of Wilber's close kinsman - merchant John Thornton). We know that John Thornton had recomended to Wilber (circa 1786) that he seek rest and contemplation in the country. So, it would seem that Wilber took John Thornton at his word and rented a property from Lord Dartmouth - mystery solved, unless I'm greatly mistaken - but I feel pretty confident about this." Hannah's parents were Robert Thornton and Jane Newbury/Newbey[can't read my writing]. Robert was the son of John Thornton of Hull, who married Jane Field. Robert's nephew, William Wilberforce (uncle of the MP), married Hannah Thornton. So we've moved a little further! Best wishes, Marylynn - Dear Dan Thanks very much for all this info. I will check out Lewisham Local History when possible. Hannah Wilberforce was the half-sister of John Thornton. If you are looking for another Wilberforce biography, I recommend Hero for Humanity by Kevin Belmonte, NavPress, published 2002, ISBN 1-57683-354-2. Kevin was inspired by Pollock. He gives a family tree at the front of the book, mentioning the Bird family. William Wilberforce, MP, was the son of Robert who married Elizabeth Bird. So Hannah was a sort of sister-in-law of Mary Bird, having married her sister's husband's brother. I will mull over all the rest! Thanks again, Marylynn.

William married Clapham sect member Spooner Barbara Anne-5723 daughter of Banker, Of Elmdon Hall, Co Warwick Spooner Isaac-15515 and Gough Barbara-15516 in 1797 in Walcot, England. Barbara died in 1847.
