So he assumed the title, only to be contradicted by a 1762 Lords Committee on Priveliges not to do so, which he ignored.

The Burr conspiracy was a matter of Burr, a friend of the first US Gov or Louisiana, General James Wilkinson, idea arose of a military adventure to take territory (Mexico) from Spain, Wilkinson is of a party which desired to separate the western American states from the Eastern. Burr stepped down from the vice-presidency and later met Anthony Merry, the British minister to US, re the people of Louisiana wanting independence, Burr asked Britain for a loan of one hundred thousand pounds for the enterprise, which Jefferson later saw as an enterprise against Spain. The enterprise failed. Wilkinson lost his nerve. Jefferson received a letter on Burr's plans from Colonel Morgan, who with his two sons had been invited in on the Burr plan, was shocked, and revealed all. Burr in Virginia was brought before Judge John Marshall. Burr was defended by Attorney Edmund Randolph. Marshall refused to make a charge of treason against Burr.
