Re e-mail from David Guyatt, As you saw, the current thrust of this thread of my research is Lord Peter Carrington (full name is Peter Alexander Rupert Smith) and I am focusing on events that involved him in WWII, where he eventually was promoted from Lieutenant to a Major in the Grenadier Guards. I hadn't really been aware of the Smith family's involvement down under but I can now understand why Carrington was, at one time, a deputy chairman of the ANZ bank.

It seems (to Guyatt, ie) that the Smiths were Jewish and were close to the Rothschilds... Having German family active during WWII impinges upon my research very strongly indeed.
