He begins career appointed High Sheriff of Yorks possibly by influence of his patron, Buckingham. He became Lord Treasurer. He is a Royalist and an Anglican. Opposes alliance with France. He arranges the 1677 marriage of Princess Mary Stuart to Wm of Orange. He tells parlt he is raising money for war with France but at behest of Charles II is talking to French re a French alliance in 1677 for which he is impeached. He is in tower for five years.
