Dear Dan,
Thanks for your last message. Good to hear the back is much improved. Your Sudanese friend sounds interesting. Quite what he makes of us only he can say! But it must be nice for you to receive some intelligent feedback and questions on slavery issues at times. I wonder what he will make of all the forthcoming European 'furore' surrounding the Abolition of Slavery anniversary next year? In Europe most of the media will be focussed on the same old Wilberforce story again, with Clarkson hardly getting a mention. Also the pro-slavers such as Hibbert, Brook Watson et al will probably be totally ignored! Another important issue is the role of London in the slave trade. Which has been very nearly totally neglected. Must be a good time for us?!!
Before I forget let me give you one or two more snippets I managed to extract from that privately printed Fitzhugh family history. You may already be aware of some of this but in no particular order here goes:

1. Page 626, Jane Austen's family were connected to the Fitzhugh family through the marriage of Harriet Lane (sister of Mary Ann Fitzhugh) who married the Reverend John Austin, Rector of Chevening.

2. Page 616, The parting 'gift' of William Fitzhugh to Canton (1790s) was the Grotto of Camoen's at Macao which was a 3 acre park named after the Portuguese poet Luis de Camoen. William retired at age 33 with a £60,000 'fortune'. (There are some antique prints of this online at the NYPL: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchdetail.cfm?trg=1&strucID=356538&imageID=1266598&word=Bradshaw%2C%20S%2E&s=3¬word=&d=&c=&f=4&lWord=&lField=&sScope=&sLevel=&sLabel=&total=11&num=0&imgs=12&pNum=&pos=7
and elsewhere on the internet).

3. On page 591 of the book it mentions that William Fitzhugh agreed a million dollar deal at 10% for the Canton Factory with the Spanish in Manila via the Royal Philippine Company for Bengal Cotton, which was arranged under a special EICo licence in exchange for silver bullion.

4. Page 449 mentions John Purling (later an MP for Shoreham) in Canton at the same time as Supercargo Thomas Fitzhugh (1753). Purling later marries Nancy Fitzhugh and become an Attorney for Fitzhugh's affairs from his London base from 1763 onwards. Note: That Purling had been a Purser on the Tavistock (2) 1745/6, before becoming an EICo Captain of the Sandwich 1752/3 & 1756/7 , and Neptune (3) 1759/60, the last two owned by Sir Charles Raymond.

5. Page 501 mentions that William Fitzhugh 'retired' from being a Levant merchant at Aleppo in 1754 (Valentine Fitzhugh was a merchant at Constantinople). He became a friend and confidant of Lord Richard Fitzwilliam

6. Pages 505-06, William Fitzhugh bought a plantation (Richmond Vale) on St Vincent in 1765.

7. Page 525, Valentine Fitzhugh resident at Bitterne, Southampton in the 1770s.

8. P.516 recounts that Thomas Fitzhugh returns home to England from China and pays the debts of his brother William to John Purling (it would appear that the plantation had some financial problems). In 1768 Thomas marries Mary Lloyd of Denbighshire whose father was a landowner (Plas Power).

9. Page 538, William Fitzhugh and William PIGOU in the silver bullion trade representing merchants from Madras to Canton against 'bills' to London (less their shipping and commission).

10. Page 544 - 553, Thomas Fitzhugh was sent to China as the President of the Select Committee re: the Chinese debt issue which had become serious, one reason being the language barrier between the British and the Hong merchants so the account indicates. Abraham Leslie a merchant is cited as 'provoking' the Chinese after he 'took over' a warehouse in lieu of debt.

11. Page 544, Henry Lane was a EICo Supercargo friend and business associate of Fitzhugh (and COX).

12. Page 581 state's that it was Lane, Lance & Fitzhugh who financed the first Nootka voyage of the Sea Otter (Captain Hanna) which is in keeping with my recent research which indicates that there was an East London Huguenot business connection between this group! Also what was really behind the Nootka trade for this group was the possibility of receiving silver in exchange for furs from the Chinese.

13, Page 557, Thomas Fitzhugh was the 'originator' of the Fitzhugh 'pattern' porcelain.

Well, hope you find some of these note of some interest Dan. They will appear of much more interest once I have combined all this together with the Richard Cadman Etches and Cox stuff which I will send you a copy of soon. Back to you again soon. Take it easy!

Best regards

Ken
