Page 449 of the Fitzhugh family history per Cozens mentions John Purling (later an MP for Shoreham) in Canton at the same time as Supercargo Thomas Fitzhugh (1753). Purling later marries Nancy Fitzhugh and become an Attorney for Fitzhugh's affairs from his London base from 1763 onwards. Note: That Purling had been a Purser on East Indiaman Tavistock (2) 1745/6, before becoming an EICo Captain of the Sandwich 1752/3 & 1756/7, and Neptune (3) 1759/60, the last two being owned by Sir Charles Raymond. 1768. P.516 of the Fitzhugh family history recounts that Thomas Fitzhugh returns home to England from China and pays the debts of his brother William to John Purling (it would appear that the plantation had some financial problems). In 1768 Thomas marries Mary Lloyd of Denbighshire whose father was a landowner (Plas Power).
