Richard Cox. Of Quarley. Contractor, army agent. Note that in Hidy, Barings, Am Trade, p. 487, note 25, Mary Baring marries an London merchant Hugh Mair (sic). Who was the fortune-making paymaster during seven years war? See notes for Thomas Harley qv and Drummonds bankers. See GEC, Peerage, Derwent of Hackness, p. 223 for clues. In 1772 Henry Drummond left Cox and Greenwood to enter his own family's business, and Richard Cox was joined by one of his clerks, (probably), Arthur Mair. Richard in 1765 moved from Albemarle Street where he is paymaster to Royal regiment of artillery, to 2 Craig's Court, Whitehall, and then entered into partnership with Henry Drummond of a 50-year established family banking firm. His patron is General, Lord Ligonier, to whom Cox is clerk, then secretary. in 1759, Ligonier is master-general of ordnance. Henry Drummond left the army agents in 1772 for his family bank. Cox is then partner with Arthur Mair qv, died 1783, to be Cox and Mair, and Cox, Mair and Cox. He is of Aspeden Hall, Hertfordshire. See Statham on NSW Corps, Ch. 3, pp. 18ff. He became clerk to General Lord Ligionier and an expert at oiling the social-military wheels. After the War of Austrian succession there were about 12 major army contractors in Britain, mostly per regiment, dealing with provisions,general troop welare, paying officers and men, providing clothing, buying and selling officer's commissions and finding weapons. He gave notoriously good parties and was an art patron. He became partner with Drummond and by 1768 they had an annual turnover of 345,000 pounds.. First at Albemarle St, then at Craig's Court, near today's Whitehall. Had a family estate at Quarley. Drummond died in 1772, Cox took in Mr. Mair, then his own son Richard Bethell Cox and Greenwood in 1783. By 1793 the army agency had 35 clerks.
