I have just finished reading this chapter on your website. William Russell was my gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. You state that he was James Russell’s brother. William Russell was born 1739-40 and married Frances Lux December 24, 1766. His first child was William, born April 20, 1769, 2nd James born Sept. 29, 1770. The Bible provides a listing of all William Russell’s children with their birth dates, some death dates and a listing of the god parents. After the listing of the birth of James it states “my brother and self God Father, Elizabeth Bowly, God Mother, has had the whooping cough, measles and small pox”. The other children were Ann Gay, Frances, George, Elizabeth, John Darby, Sarah Stewart (my great great grandmother), Daniel, William (again), Ann (again), and Archibald Moncrieff Russell. All this to say that we believe that James Russell was William Russell’s uncle. Do you have any documentation that James and William were brothers? Do you know where James and William were born in England? The National Portrait Gallery has a portrait of James Russell which we think is the son of William. Also they sent me a letter written some time ago by the curator who said that there is also a portrait of William Russell and wife. He believed it to be painted by Peale. This portrait is in the private collection of Mrs. Theodore Gould. Oh well, thanks for hearing me out. If you have documentation to show that William and James are brothers I would really appreciate you letting me know. Thanks.
