Update on Glover-Campbell lineage per DR Arathoon of 8-7-2008. Arathoon genealogy. He goes to a school private boarding school in Darjeeling. DR says, "My father went to a English Boarding school in Darjeeling, ( as did my mother ) in his classroom at St Paul's was a loud plaque announcing the birth of W M Thackeray, (SIC) it was odd for the boys to look at knowing someone got birthed in their classroom...I save this sort of sophist stuff and somewhere may be able to use it. I too make lists, they may be a bit more scattered."

See article by Narendra K. Sinha, The Armenian Traders in Bengal, in Asiya Siddiqi, Trade and Finance in Colonial India, 1750-1860. It's dubious whether his forebear was a PM of Persia, a netsurf on 27-12-2004 gives no clues. Is the time of the Zand dynasty (period of?? ) or the Qajar Dynasty (1779-1924). Note that in Encyclopedia Britannica (entry, Persia), after its mentions of the furore stirred by the the Bab (the religious reformer whose movement produce the Bahai faith), we find that by 876 the Shah is a young man frightened by the failure of an attempt in Turkey to propose a constitutional government, and he later tries to keep Persia free of dangerous new ideas. Persia was anyway not yet ripe for any new order, but the Shah is against progressivism. But then Nasr el-Din is assassinated in 1896. He was succeeded by Muzaffar el-Din, who got into trouble, and Pesia into debt, by borrowing large amounts of money from the Russians, money he wasted on his favourites and on his travels to Europe. In his time, all fear of the Shah dissipated and bandits roamed the countryside with impunity. One of the new-wave or new-order politicians, was Jamal ed-Din, an "agitator", who gained some influence in Persia and Turkey in the last years of Nasr el-Din. He is rather a pan-Islamist than a constitutionalist, but he vehemently denounces the corruptions of the vizier of Persia. A pro-Persian parliament man, or constitutionalist, is Prince Malkom, "a clever Armenian", with a French education. He had once bought from the shah a lottery which the vizier wanted to cancel, and so the vizier makes an enemy of him. Prince Malkom becomes the Persian minister in London and while he has this post, he quarrels with the vizier. So Malkom publishes a paper in which he advocates a parliament for Persia, and never ceases to denounce the vizier. However, the move for constitutional reform of Persia did not take further hold till 1905, when a definite movement for this formed, protesting against the vizier - who was blamed for the costly journeys of the Shah, for corrupt government and disorder in the country. A number of merchants took sanctuary of bast in a mosque, in the capital, and were joined by some agitating mullahs. They were driven from the mosque by the vizier and proceeded to the shrine of Shah Abdul Azim outside Tehran, where they were joined by other reform-minded people. This agitation did succeed in moving the shah to dismiss the objectionable vizier. Finally, Muzaffar ed-Din opened an assembly in October 1906 and died soon after; the shah also died about this time. The regime set up by the shah's son, Mohammed Ali, "an oriental despot of the worst type", tried to work against all moves for consitutional reform. A vizier was assassinated - by an assassin who suicided. The finances of Persia were a mess. However, the spring of 1909, with Russian aid, the pro-constututionalist movement had some success, and the shah emigrated from Persia. From 1909, for 35 years, Persia had consititutional government. Need to get out the notes on the Campbell who is on the first British boat up the Euphrates.

So, are you from > the Calcutta Armenian merchant class?Hi Dan Christmas is over for me, I was at my parents and my father got a new lap top so I showed him your site, and we saw Sutton Place in all it's glory! It looks pretty good and if I am not mistaken one of the few graphics on your site!I am not sure how it all fits in the Lucas/Malcolms/Campbells/Glovers etc this and that. I get info as it comes in or the books that arrive etc almost weekly. So it is catalogued in random order and for my own pleasure.I share as best I can, but few of those genealogical lists have any help for me. I seem to be coming up with leads and answer for other people, which is fine too. I am not knowledgeable about computers or various systems etc. Thankfully I have regained typing skills learned in the 70'sThis 2A2 file, I would call a prenuptial agreement by Launce brothers to Philip and Launce, 2 days before her marriage, you may want to say the file numbers : FILE - Attested copy articles previous to marriage of Philip Glover, junior, with Miss Launce Campbell. - ref. Hea 275, 253 x 1 - date: 5 Sep 1800My grandfather was told we are descendants from a Sir John Malcolm of Scotland... who got married to an Armenian girl. Well the only one I ever come up with is the famous Gov of Bombay, who married at age 38 (to a Campbell!!! )and his 'real family tree' bares no names to any relations of mine. Maybe this Sir John had a first wife, daughter of an Armenian Merchant Prince "Khojar", I can not say for sure, I doubt is was a quick liaison if it was the same person. This would be original research, on the level of Neil's parents. It seems possible he 'did' something being in India and Persia as a teenager to age 38. A young wife could have died and the children left in care of Armenian grandparents, forming a line there, way before he was well known.I do know in more recent times my for sure relatives the Malcolm's were in the shipping business in a big way and my grandfather's uncles owned A & T J Malcolm steamships and were agents of Anglo-Arabian Steamship lines and that went on with them 100 years prior. People have suggested 'arms' were smuggled by them...for England/or whom ever...I do not know. I am trying to get in touch with Sir Denis Wright regarding the Malcolms, he is old and although I have some of his collected works he has cut short his pages on them, and seems to have a vast knowledge about them dating to early East India Co. which does not suit his articles. A lot of the Malcolm's / Lucas were naturalized British Citizens. Arakiel's 16 pages of naturalization papers are on there way to me. These Lucas-Malcolms are on the opposite side of my tree (mother's side) as opposed to my Campbell's -Glovers, Pascoes etc...However my own mother suspect in someway or another she is a distant cousin of my father as well. The Lucas Family I have traced back to Mackertich "TER" Lucas, that is only c 1815, he was an Armenian version of an Archbishop. His descendant Arakiel Lucas ( my grandfather wrote, Postmaster General of the Persian Posts ), married Prince Mirza sister, Ripsima Malcolm and their child Madeline Lucas married her first cousin Aratoon Malcolm, (spelt that way). There was much intermarriage, my grandfather said they kept the wealth in the family and there were few Christians of aristocratic background to marry in Persia. Madeline Lucas and Aratoon Malcolm also had a son named Aratoon Malcolm who is my grandfather. His other grandparents were Charlotte Malcolm (sister of Prince Mirza) and her 2nd? cousin the 'Agha' Aratoon Malcolm of Bushire. Agha is a term my grandfather translated as "His Excellency". I have had a lot of trouble getting new info on the Armenian side of my family, the British side has been no problem, except Neil's parents of course (a joke)It's possible I should be looking for a family originally called Malkomian...???My father's Arathoon family is an adopted name, I have got as far back as my Great grandfather! that is all. What I know of them is that they were the ADAMS of Persia, well know to have a town named after them centuries ago. Now Adams is not an Armenian name...so I will have to work on that. My great grandfather brother A. M. Arathoon (formerly Adams) came to India before the turn of the century and was a plantation owner in the LAC trade, as in Shellac. He became a multi millionaire with this business was the guardian of my other grandfather, M. D. Arathoon ( born Adams) who parents David and Elizabeth Adams died prematurely in Persia. I have pictures of the plantations and the workers and A. M .Arathoon is commonly known as "Jhalda Arathoon", Jhalda being one location of his plantations. There are stories on line regarding Jhalda Arathoon, my great great uncle...I see him as a sort of Col John of Blackriver and my grandfather a Neil. Many of my first cousins/their children live in and around Sydney, from the Malcolm side of the family not Campbell. They cleared out of India in the 1960's. My grandfather died near East Lakes in the 1980's, we discussed family matters but the letters were slow to come and few. Some aunts and uncles more died more recently there. One batch of early Glovers went to New Zealand.....(Launce Mary Willox Glover married 1872, Henry Owen Dunsford)Talk soon. DPSMy brother gave me a web-cam!!! do you have one? I have to figure it all out. PSSThese people got this list wrong , I wrote them so, last night:www.shorelibraries.govt.nz/ Topics/Heritage/MtVicBurials.php(first 2 listed are the same person, Launce Campbell's granddaughter, I have other dates:)
