Formerly William Brown and Co (established in Liverpool in 1810), then William and James Brown and Co (1814-37), becoming Brown Shipley and Co in 1837. (Joseph Shipley had become a partner in 1825.) Originally formed to act as agents for the American business of Alexander Brown. The London office opened in 1863. Until 1914, the company was a branch of the American company, Brown Brothers and Co. He sends perhaps 1 million pounds per year of goods to US, esp Manchster goods. He has line of 16 ships, to Philadelphia and Baltimore. He is Irish brought up in US.
