Hodson's Lists of Anglo-India families
Updated from May 2001
Recently (by 2001 ie), a researcher working on ancestors with commercial links in India emailed
a copy (from The India Mailing List) of the following lists of some English
East India Company personnel by Major Hodson (compiled 1932-1933). The material was well-worth following up...
(The citation is: Major V. C. P. Hodson, "Some Families with a Long East
Indian Connection", The Genealogists Magazine, March,
1932-December 1933.)

"Some families" is precisely the point... Hodson's lists are interesting,
but partial, or incomplete. He seems more interested in soldiers and/or administrators,
than in traders or financial operators. In particular, he seems quite uninterested
in free traders (or, country traders) - some of whom may have trafficked in
opium. Some surnames he mentions are rare, or almost never seen in other available writings. Others are well-known;
but there are many well-known "East India Company names" he ignores.
Hodson lists only 36 men's names, with dates. He lists few if any women. He
does however list 186 different surnames with family members active in India.
As below:
As should be clear from The Blackheath Connection website,
I am interested especially in trading names dealing with Nineteen Century colonial
Australasia. These trading names are often difficult to trace in full, but Hodson's
lists, if expanded, might provide extra clues?
So I decided to simply add to Hodson's list as many family lineages as my database
can find. The result are below, displayed with little comment so far. This file
will be gradually updated as new information comes to hand and the value of
Hodson's listings becomes clearer.
If the information below is of any assistance to family historians, well and
good!

Our emailer comments:
In the early 1930s, Major V.C.P.Hodson wrote a series of articles for The
Genealogists' Magazine with the above subject heading.
Given is the Surname, followed by the first entry (this person did not/may have
not / necessarily serve in India but his subsequent family/ies did). Also given
are related surnames by marriage. For those interested, for full details contact
the Society of Genealogists, London. They have no email address but their fax
numbers are:- National = 020-7250-1800 International = +44-20-7250-1800.
Major V. C. P. Hodson, "Some Families with a Long East Indian Connection ...
Part of the Introduction reads: (And the immaculateness and complacency of the pukka pomposity
of the racism of the below, today, reads as difficult / impossible to believe! Even by 1933? No
metaphorical bread for the Indians of India? Evidently not! - Ed)
" 'Some people will tell you that if there were but a single loaf of bread
in all India it would be divided equally between the Plowdens, the Trevors,
the Beadons, and the Rivett-Carnacs. That is only one way of saying that certain
families served India generation after generation"......
Thus wrote Kipling in.... The Tomb of his Ancestors, and he might, with equal
justice have included in his list the Colvins, the Prinseps (see elsewhere on
websites), the Thackerays (see elsewhere on websites), the Bechers, the Stracheys.........
"
Major V.C.P.Hodson concluded his articles thus:
"It is not easy to take leave of this subject without at least recalling
to memory a few more of the many names which might have been included in this
list:- ANDERSON, BARLOW, BODDAM, BRACKEN, BROOKE, BUSHBY, CADELL of Cockenzie,
CHASE, DAVIS, FARQUHARSON, FENDALL, GOLDING, HARINGTON, HARRISON, LEWIN, MALET,
MASTER, METCALFE, MILLETT, OAKES, OLDFIELD, OLDHAM, OMMANNEY, ROBINSON, RUMBOLD,
SEWELL, STONHOUSE, THACKERAY AND TRAVERS."
