20. US Politician Jay John-2182 (Maria Van Cortlandt , Jacobus , Olaf Stephanus Stevense , Steven , Progenitor ) was born in 1745 in New York. He died in 1829.

Bhagat in his article, p. 11 says Jay was tricked by British re US trade, US made mistake in agreeing to carry directly in ships from India to America even if goods meant for countries beside US. This limited American carrying. There was a US ship about India about 1794, named John Jay, which was finally captured by British privateers. He is sometime legal partner to Robert Livingston qv, he married Sarah a dr of William Livingston, Jay = Pres Continental Congress in Dec 1778, and in 1781 apptd as one of commissioners to negotiate peace with Britain. In 1784-1789 he was Sec of Foreign Affairs, wanted a powerful central government, he thought "those who owned the country ought to govern it", and re Jay's Treaty of 1794, Britain upset re US vessels trade with French West Indies, and ordered seizure of such vessels, Pres Washington in April 1794 sent Jay to London, and US wanted posts of the Old North-West that Britain had. Treaty signed Jay-Grenville on Nov 19, 1794, US to abandon the N-W posts. Treaty owed much to enemy of Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, but caused outcry in US.

John married Livingstone Sarah Van Brugh-2181 daughter of Gov New Jersey Livingstone William-1753 and Of New Brunswick French Susanna-3711 in North America,probably. Sarah was born in 1756. She died in 1802 in Bedford New York.

George III in 1770 gave him and partners Letters Patent for about 38,000 acres between west branch of Delaware River and Ssusqueanna River, along with men of British high command, Major William Sheriff (deputy q-master-general), Hugh Wallace (Loyalist contractor provisioner to the British and a link to London-born colonial official named Goldsbrow Banyar who made much of land deals), Gabriel Minturn (qv), Thomas Gamble (asst to Wm Sheriff) and Stephen (qv brother of John) Kemble (land confiscated by State of New York in 1779). Once petitioned to supply bread to nacy at Sth Carolina. Consignee for British tea. gapskey re family torn apart by Am Rev. Member of New York City Councl and President of New York Chamber of Commerce 1772-1773. Moved to London by fall of 1783. See Kellock's article, p. 117.
