Thirteenth Generation

109. Lord Sydney Of St Leonards, Visc1 Sydney Townshend Thomas-4977 (Thomas , Charles (Agric Improver) , Horatio , Roger , John , Roger , Richard , John , Roger II , Roger , John , Progenitor ) was born on 24 Feb 1733 in Of Kent. He died on 30 Jun 1800 in Frognal,Chiselhurst.

He is son1. See Atkinson, Vol. 1, on descent from republican Algernon Sydney. Does he have a sister Sarah? See mystery entry for a Sarah Townshend. He initially sat in the interest of the Selwyn family; his uncle is George Augustus Selwyn. He was early faithful to Newcastle. Namier /Brooke do not mention the Australian matter in their entry on this man. Namier/Brooke, Vol. 3, p. 554. See Haffenden, p. 36. His cousin Charles was secretary of the Admiralty, sometime President of the Board of Trade, Sec of War, Chancellor of Exchequer. Derek Townshend a descendant of this family, qv, e-mails as follows on 7-2-2005.
Dear Dan, My next question . . . I have been looking at Lord Sydney's interaction with James Mario Matra, which seems to be the largest form of resentment eminating from Australia towards Lord Sydney. Matra's first article; A proposal for Establishing a Settlement in New South Wales to Atone for the Loss of our American Colonies was an elaborate 38 page plan on how Loyalist settlements in NSW would work. He presented it to the British government on 23rd August 1783. The common accusation is that Lord Sydney ignored this plan and basically deserted prospects in Australia.

What is NOT mentioned is that on the 23rd August 1783 Lord Sydney was not the Home Secretary. In fact, the documents would have been received by the Duke of Portland's ministry from (April 1783 to Dec 1783) when Lord North was the Home Secretary. Also worth noting is that Lord Sydney was one of
North's fiercest critics when he was previously prime-minister (1770 to 1782). So, in Dec 1783 Lord Sydney as Home Secretary stepped into the position of his arch-enemy, Lord North. It would not surprise me if Lord North made it as difficult as possible for Sydney to take over the reigns by not forwarding Matra's plans to him.

What I am suggesting is very significant, Lord North who received Matra's proposals may have changed the coarse of Australian history by purposefully witholding information out of spite towards Lord Sydney. We know from supporters of North, i.e. Nathaniel Wraxall and the events surrounding the
by-election of the 1784 Westminster seat, that that faction was able to stoop pretty low.

Another common Australian accusation derived from Sydney's apparent ignoring of Matra is that he cared little of British American Loyalists who were driven out of America by the intolerant revolutionaries. This is clearly not the case. Sydney's prompt actions and replies to Gov Fanning and DesBarres in Canada show that he was indeed on top of the Loyalist situation. In fact, I would say that his ignoring of James Matra is very out of character. So, my question is, has anyone ever investigated the animosity between North and Sydney being the reason for Matra's plans being ignored? Regards, Derek
