7. Lt the Emigrant Stillwell Nicholas-378676 (Nicholas Snr , John II , John Snr , Progenitor ) was born in 1609/1610 in Leyden Hull. He died in 1672 in Staten Island NY.

Stillwell, M.D.,

between December 22nd, 1671, and June 17th, 1672, the respective dates of
the execution and probate of his will.

That Lt. Nicholas married 1st, Abigail Hopton, 2nd. Ann Van Dyke appears to have
first been published in 1878 by Benjamin Marshall Stilwell in his book "Early
Memoirs of the Stilwell Family, comprising the Life and Times of Nicholas
Stilwell,...". Dr. John E. Stillwell comments on the above book in his own
book by saying, "As a family we have had our family history entertainingly
chronicled by the late Benjamin M. Stilwell, Esq., in his 'Life and Times of
Nicholas Stilwell'. In his work Mr. Stilwell incorporated, without
discrimination, both fact and fiction, sometimes citing authorities
insufficiently convincing."(JES 1:35) Dr. Stillwell argues that ther is no
proof of a marriage to an Abigail Hopton and concludes, "...so of necessity
there falls to the ground the tale of an Abigail Hopton, wife of the first
Nicholas Stillwell..." (JES 1:36) Dr. Stillwell goes on to say, "The statement
that the wife of Nicholas Stillwell, the First, was a Dutch woman rests on too
meager evidence to be entertained." (JES 1:36) Later he states that "She was
probably an English woman" (JES 188) and conclude that "Ann Stillwell was the
mother of many, if not all, of Nicholas Stillwell's children". (JES 1:88)

There is also conflicting information to be found as to the children of
Lt. Nicholas and Ann Stillwell. I have chosen to use the list of children as
published by Dr. John E. Stillwell and to show "Ann" as the mother of all the
children. I believe that Dr. Stillwell's work is more thoroughly researched
using primary source documents. I also feel that the other publications which
show the Abigail Hopton and Ann Van Dyke marriages can be traced back to
Benjamin M. Stilwell's work, which must be held in suspect.
