5. Contractor, merchant, Dir BofE Sargent John-20398 (John , Thomas , Progenitor ) was born in 1714 in St Dunstans in the East. He died in 1791 in Tunbridge Wells.

Contractor, mail contractor to America pre-1775. He is first apprentice to his mother's first cousin, George Arnold (1685-1751), London linen draper, then junior partner for 16 years or so. He became interested in India and Africa as a market for private traders as Britain's commerce expanded. His firm became larger and a supplier to Africa. With merchants Richard Oswald, John Mill, Augustus and John Boyd and Alexander Grant in 1748, his firm provisioned Bance Island after buying it in 1748, a slave-trans-shipment factory in Sierra Leone. As Arnold died in 1751, Sargent continued as Sargent, Aufrere and Co., with George Aufrere, they often up to four partners, more than usual for such firms. In 1753 he became Director Bank of England, and so for 15 years. In 1754 he becomes MP but stepped down with the decline of Montagu. In 1755 govt decided to reinstate private mail-packet carriage to the Caribbean. He entered this with Richard Stratton (1704-1759) from 6 Nov 1755. He was agent for both of Pennsylvania and New York. From 1766 he was involved with the Illinois Company/Walpole Company, at the instigation of his friend Benjamin Franklin. wanting a grant of 2.4 million acres across the Appalachians. Permission not given till 1772 re south and west of Pennsylvania, too late as the Revolution began to threaten. He suffered by the Am Rev in his American cloth trade and turned his firm to his younger partners. He is yst of two children. John married Chambers Rosamunde-12909 daughter of Of Derby Chambers John-79908 and Greenwood Elizabeth-79907. Rosamunde was born in 1722. She died in 1792 in Great Ormond Street London.

John and Rosamunde had the following children:

+ 10 M i Sargent John III-292864 was born in 1750. He died in 1831.
  11 M ii Sargent George-292865 was born in 1748. He died in 1805.

        George married Langston Marianne-511519. Marianne was born in 1755. She died in 1853.
