Is he a general? Is supposed to have been at Yale in 1833 class and set up the Skull and Bones Club, or Russell Trust Foundation, as co-founder with Alonso Taft. He is of Middleton, CT. He is variously a step-brother cousin or nephew of Samuel Wadsworth Russell qv. He co-founded Skull and Bones at Yale with Alphnso Taft. He was a partner in a freight company, Russell, Majors and Waddell, shifting mail (Pony Express). An activist in the group which helped found The Republican Party. An abolitionist and a friend of abolitionist John Brown. Had fought on the Union side in Civil War.

William married Hubbard Mary Elizabeth-78593 daughter of Professor at Yale Hubbard Thomas-531373 and Gray Lucy-531374 in 1836. Mary was born in 1816.

Http says he has a cousin, William Huntingdon Russell, the co-founder of Skull and Bones Club at Yale. Note that Smyrna opium is handled by English Levant Co. He is active by 1823 in email and http by Linda Minor her email of 6-11-2000. In 1823 he establishes Russell and Co to take opium from Turkey to China, after being forced out of the African slave trade. His operations link back in US to Daniel C. Bacon. Linked to Parsi merchants, opium growers. Retired from Russell and Co in 1836, went into industry, banking and Western railroad stock. He latterly formed Russell Manufacturing Co., made cotton webbing for hoop skirts, lawn chairs, There is a William Russell (3) who marries Mary a sister-in-law to one Jonathan Edwards. There is a Yale Trustee William Russell (1754-1761) who seems a grandson of Yale Family Chart man Rev Nodiah Russell one of ten men founding Yale University in 1701. In 1823-1824 was created firm Russell and Co. at Canton, a successor to Samuel Russell and Co, of 1819, both firms dealing in opium. and to the 1850s, the US Consul at Canton was usually a Russell and Co. merchant. Their agent at Shanghai of 1845 was Henry C. Wolcott, acting US consul. Russell and Co. (closed in 1891) opened in Shanghai in 1846, firstly with John N. A Griswold qv, who had a partner, one Edward Cunningham. In 1828 he built Samuel Wadsworth Russell House, in Middletown CT. Russell & Co. Go Out of Business, 1891 - Partners of the Russell and Co. firm to 1891 consisted of W.H. Forbes, H.D. Forbes, John M. Forbes Jr. of New York, C. Vincent Smith, George M. Wheeler, S.W. Pomeroy (who opened the New York branch in 1878), and E.H.M. Huntington. (Russell & Co. in Trouble. New York Times, Jun. 4, 1891.) The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was a creditor, and it had an account at the National Bank of Commerce. Mr. Beaman of Evarts, Choate & Beaman was counsel for the firm. The partners were listed as W.H. and H.D. Forbes of Hongkong, S.W. Pomeroy of London, E.H.M. Huntington of Paris, and John M. Forbes Jr. of New York. Henry Hannah was manager of the New York branch.
