He dies at 69 Bryanston Sq., London. He had sailed as a writer to India in Britannia in 1766 and returned in Feb 1779. He returns to Bengal in 1795 and serves the EICo there till 1815. There is a new book about James Brooke just out - White Rajah by Nigel Barley. It has 3 photos of James Brooke and one of his mother Anna Maria Stuart. In the brief background of James Brooke's family, it implies that his mother could have had been part Indian. As her father Lt. Col. James Stuart was in the Coldstream Guards in England and America I don't think that was possible although I have not found a marriage for him or the births of his three children mentioned in Charles Stuart's will. Sometimes his name is spelt Stewart in Army Lists. I have read a book by Gertrude Jacobs about James Brooke which is given as a source by other writers. In one of his letters he mentions going to the funeral of his mother's brother James Stuart in 1833 in London - his mother was upset at her brother's death, and later that her other brother Major Charles Stuart died in 1854 and he was very attached to him because he was so like his mother.
