23. Capt HEIC Mortlock Charles-220382 (John III , John II , John I , Rowland , Robert , John , John IV , Progenitor ) was born in 1782.
This man has a cousin, (or brother-in-law?), Edward Woodhouse a Lt in EICo army). By age13 he is midship on Taunton Castle, Capt Edward Studd, major owner being Peter Esdaile. Later he is on Taunton Castle under Captain Bond, in 1798. Then he is 1200-ton Ocean maiden voyage for Canton, Captain Patton; that ship lost in Sept 1810 in South China Sea, In 1802 he is Third Mate on 1200-ton Elphinstone Capt Milliken Craig,then he goes to Hugh Inglis, Captain Fairfax, from Bombay to Canton, in the same convoy as her mates all died of disease; but the Hugh Inglis is wormy and leaks. Then he is on Streatham under one of his old captains, John Dale, on Streatham, by 1809. He later has his own first command, of an Indiaman family-owned, Charlton 26-guns, built in Liverpool in 17898 by Humble and Hardy, for about £40,000, which has a financially disastrous voyage, in http on Mortlock of Cambridge. Charlton is taken by the French in November 1809, having been for Madiera and Bengal. This man is a Freemason, by family legend. In December 1810 he is in comand of738-ton Cambridge, co-owned by Capt James Thomas, and Robert Downie of Calcutta, she is first named Porcher, built at Calcutta in 1799. Then till1822 he is commander of Lowther Castle. On his first voyage as capt of Lowther Castle, he has a purser, John Wordsworth.
