I work in the Florida History Room, Monroe County Public Library, Key West (FL) branch and am currently researching one of the original owners of the island, John William Charles Fleeming (nee J W C Fleeming, J W C Fleming, Charles Fleeming, Charles Fleming) who is the only original proprietor to be buried here. He was the stepson of Francis Rotch. Francis Rotch, of the New Beford Rotch whaling family, is mentioned many times in your Merchant News. It is believed he married a woman named Deborah while in England (from Bullard's book) who would be the mother of our Mr. Fleeming-----more than that, we do not know. Francis Rotch was in Milford Haven, Dunkirk and Calais. Should you come across his name, any information on the marriage of Francis and "Deborah", or have any suggestions for a place to begin my search in England or France I would be deeply grateful.
