William Russell (b.1711) of Russell and Ridley. Dan, in the information that you sent "4. William Piscataway Russell & Ridley/Russell/merchant Russell -------William-506 (b.1739)---sp:Lux, Frances-178686 (m.1766)" is my grgrgr grandfather. I don't know what the numbers such as William -506 or Frances-178686 mean. Do you? George Ely Russell who has written many articles and several books has researched this line extensively. I also have will, land, deed, and probate records relative to my William Russell born 1739. To answer your question about the Lux and Stewart connection. Frances Lux was the daughter of Darby Lux. Her sister Sarah Jane married Alexander Stewart in 1757. Frances' other sister married a Nicholas Ruxton Gay. There is also a connection to the Ridgleys. George Ely Russell wrote the following: Dr. Jacob Price in article about merchant James Russell of Scotland, Maryland and London, mistakenly identifies him as the brother of the one born in Scotland, 18, March 1711, son of...... Dr. Price states that William's older brother James(1708) settled in Prince Georges county, Maryland, ca. 1729-30, and became a prominent merchant, later moving to London. [MHM 72:168] It is more likely that James was his uncle, referred to in 1770 when William's son, James, was baptized with "uncle Russell" among the sponsors.

William Russell also emigrated to Maryland, becoming a merchant at Piscataway on the Potomac in the 1760s, and at Baltimore ca. 1770. He was in London in 1762 when he witnessed the marriage of his niece [cousin more likely] Eleanor Russell to William Molleson at St Andrew Undershaft Church. he was in Baltimore in 1770. An account book for years 1774-83 is in the Md. His. Society., Ms. 1989. Like other Baltimoreans, his trade was largely to the West Indies and southern Europe, but he was also agent for Duncan Campbell (successor to Stewart & Campbell) of London. William's firm in Baltimore was styled Russell & Ridley, his partner being Matthew Ridley. For further data see: Thos. W. Griffith, Annals of Baltimore (1824), pp. 48-9, 59, 104, 134, 137, 144; and J. Thos. Scharf, Chronicles of Baltimore (1874), pp. 43, 71, 209, 249, 261, 262, 272. Darby Lux had been a partner in a rum importing business with William Russell. [D. Lux to C. Grahame, 12 Oct. 1773, Russell Papers, Couts & Co., London]

The William Russell Account Book 1774-1783 was donated to the Maryland Historical Society by Mrs. John Avirette.
MS. 1989 William Russell Ledger. Maryland merchant involved in the West Indian and grain trades. Transactions with London and Glasgow merchants and with his Baltimore partner, Matthew Ridley; notations for servants house constructions, loans, mortgages, food liquor, furniture and horses; mentions of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer and Abraham Van Bibber. One volume, 1774- 1783.
I have William Russell’s that says Russell Bible, London and it lists all of the children and godparents. This is definitely my William Russell. I am just not sure that William was James’ brother because of the age difference. If you know what the numbers mean that was in the information that you sent please let me know. I have quite a lot of records on my William Russell and if you need anything relative to him let me know.

Re Wm Russell - Seems Jacob Price gave him 18 Mar 1711
as a wrong birth year - See J. Price on Joshua Johnson in London, pp. 155ff. Was Capt Dan Russell in
Coldham, on ship Forward in October 1722 any link with this sector of the Russell family? Price, One Family, p. 178 says Charles Ridgely from an old Baltimore family, with an ironworks, Ridgely had started as a ships captain with James Russell, then set up as merchant in Baltimore, but eventually Ridgely transferred his business to John Buchanan and others. Ridgely with Russell's help bought some land from John and Herbert Hyde, the aged sons of Capt John Hyde 1655-1732, the largest Maryland merchants about 1700. See also notes on Lux family qv. Wm Russell at one time had a rum importing business with Darby Lux. Price in One Family, p. 168 notes this man as a partner with Matthew Ridley who was also an agent with DC. This man is James' youngest brother, emigrated to
Maryland to be a merchant on the Potomac at Piscataway in the 1760s and at Baltimore about 1770.
When at Piscataway he dealt with John Stewart and Campbell. It is rather odd in Price, One Family, that he reports nothing of this man's children when he says so much about other Russells; so presumably none of William's children married near the Lee family. Chapter 42 The Battle of the Red Book and the Green Book at Lloyd’s

I have just finished reading this chapter on your website. William Russell was my gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. You state that he was James Russell’s brother. William Russell was born 1739-40 and married Frances Lux December 24, 1766. His first child was William, born April 20, 1769, 2nd James born Sept. 29, 1770. The Bible provides a listing of all William Russell’s children with their birth dates, some death dates and a listing of the god parents. After the listing of the birth of James it states “my brother and self God Father, Elizabeth Bowly, God Mother, has had the whooping cough, measles and small pox”. The other children were Ann Gay, Frances, George, Elizabeth, John Darby, Sarah Stewart (my great great grandmother), Daniel, William (again), Ann (again), and Archibald Moncrieff Russell. All this to say that we believe that James Russell was William Russell’s uncle. Do you have any documentation that James and William were brothers? Do you know where James and William were born in England? The National Portrait Gallery has a portrait of James Russell which we think is the son of William. Also they sent me a letter written some time ago by the curator who said that there is also a portrait of William Russell and wife. He believed it to be painted by Peale. This portrait is in the private collection of Mrs. Theodore Gould. Oh well, thanks for hearing me out. If you have documentation to show that William and James are brothers I would really appreciate you letting me know. Thanks.

William and Frances had the following children:

  26 M i Russell William-178689 was born on 20 Apr 1769.
  27 M ii Russell James-178690 was born on 29 Sep 1770.
