He is a cousin of Washington Irving qv. He had a legacy from his Uncle Lewis qv allowing him to go into China and East India trade but he lost all the value of that in 1792 by his association with William Duer in Alexr Hamilton's scheme to fund the national debt, qv. He tried New Orleans but returned to New York. A report he once made on New Orleans was "imstrumental" in Jefferson deciding to buy Louisiana.
