John married Shepherd Christian-57594 daughter of Rev Shepherd John-82333 and SNotknown Miss-92394.

John and Christian had the following children:

  4 M i Founder Forbes and Co Bombay, agency house Forbes John-57599 was born in Sep 1743. He was christened in 1810 in active. He died on 20 Jun 1821.

He is known to friends as "purser Jock" and later as "Bombay Jock". This man from 1782 rescues his family's finances back in Scotland. Cf., A. and H. Tatlor, (Eds.), The House of Forbes. Third Spalding Club, Aberdeen, 1937 per David L Walker. On John Forbes brother of Rev George Forbes, Bulley, p. 109 re opium possibly, in 1806, Forbes and Co. sent cotton in two ships to William Baring and Co., Canton, while Alexr Adamson sent ship David Scott and another ship to Beale and Magniac. Bulley, p. 64ff, in 1802 Forbes Smith and Co., own ship Seringapatam. He leaves India in 1799. See book on Bombay country ships pp. 190ff per Iseke, seems this man comes to Bombay in 1784? See Hodson lists? He is leader of his family in http: item. He is born at Belleberg (?) in Sept 1743. In early life goes to Bombay, becomes an extensive merchant in India, derives a fortune, he re-purchased Newe his family estate, and died 20 June 1821. He begins house in India in 1767, presumably the man who begins new larger firm Forbes of Bombay on 1 August 1811. The firm still survives in Bombay. See email from Patricia Iseke NZ of 3-2-2001. See re Linda Minor. Burke's P&B for Forbes of Newe. He is noted briefly in Ellis on L. Macquarie, pp. 51, 79, 86-87, 98. He is an uncle of Sir Charles Forbes MP of Forbes and Co, see HM Ellis on Lachlan Macquarie, p. 98. Cite, Sir Evan Cotton, East Indiamen. ?, circa 1950 (?). Walker conveys this man is purser on "Asia" 651 tons to Bomaby, first in 1763-1764, again in 1767-1768, commander on Asia is Cornelius Inglis. Farrington shows him as purser of Bute 657 tons to Madras/China, in 1769-1770, and Bessborough 907 tons to Bombay, Madras and China in 1776-1777. Holden Furber in John Comany at Work p. 221, mentions house (James) Sibbald, (W.) Lockyer and Forbes as insurers in 1782 for ship "Count Pool" belonging to Imperial East India Co. of Trieste, lost at Delagoa Bay carrying ivory and slaves. By 1789, John Forbes is attorney for James Sibbald Esq an EICo servant, a writer in 1761, junior merchant in 1771 senior merc by 1774, unrecorded after 1782. In 1792, this man appears in a list of major Bombay merchants: Alexander Adamson, Bruce, Fawcett and Co., Forbes and Co, Joseph Harding, Rivett and Wilkinson, Miguel de Leuis Souza, James Tait, and Taylor and Agnew. This man returns from Bombay in 1805 to live at 9 Fitzroy Square, London.
