In Feb 1819 he arrived at Port Louis, Mauritius, to head military govt after island taken from French in 1811; where 70,000 slaves worked sugar plantations. He tried to end the traffic in slaves and incurred planter wrath. He is uncle of his asst private sec, Charles Darling. He had one son and several drs. His own ADB entry. Ralph married Dumaresq Eliza-14145 daughter of Colonel Dumaresq John-11747 and Jones Anne-11748. Eliza was born in 1798 in Macao. She died in 1868.
