On Elias Haskett Derby, died 1799 - Website http says he has ship The Light Horse in 1784 to Russia and he opens trade with Mauritius and China with the Grand Turk in 1785. In 2002 says Salem Mass sent hundreds of US vessels to Mauritius, from 1780s through to early 1800s, see info from Phillips Library, 50 ships logs survive, tho slow down with troubles of 1807-1812. In 1786 Grand Turk is first US ship to go to Mauritius, Capt Ebenezer West in 1785 chartered Grand Turk access via 1783 treaty France- US- for Elias Hasket Derby, who later sent his 20-yr-old son to Mauritius, Elias Derby Jnr., the boy later went to Madras by 1790, deals of Richard plus Elias Hasket Derby. This family [see GEC, Peerage, Leeds, p. 512, Note A] is descended from Roger Derby the emigrant to Salem in 1671, providing these Derbys with vague connection to the Dukes of Leeds by 1690 etc. See also, Robert A. Other US-India traders were Benjamin and Jacob Crowninshield. by 1792. Cf., Richard H. Bhagat article, p. 7, on 15 Dec 1792, Derby in India stated that his ship Grand Turk would soon sail for the US. Bhagat p. 7 notes on William Duane, an American who set up a newspaper in Calcutta, rather startling, got into trouble and in 1794 he appealed to John Jay, then in London with Jay Treaty, for assistance, to no avail. Duane was arrested and whisked out of British India. Gordinier p. 153 says that due to his immersion in US-India trade EH Derby became US first millionaire. See Gordinier article on US-India trade.
