gapskey Lawyer. Became a Federal Circuit judge. He wrote possibly the first example of American secular music, "My days have been so wondrous free". In religion he was an Episcopalian. Also a musician, poet, artist. It is believed he had a hand in design of the first American flag, a contentious matter not fully accepted even in his own day. As he was on the second committee that designed the Great Seal of the USA, it is thought he had an influence. The seal as it was designed by William Barton, did have an unfinished pyramid with a radiant eye, an image used by Hopkinson when he designed the Continental $50 currency. As the wikipedia page on Hopkinson notes, "Contemporary conspiracy theorists hold that the seal contains Freemasonry images." So does it? (The wikipedia page on Wm Barton (1754-1817) a Pennsylvania lawyer, scholar of heraldry, who with designer CharlesThomson designed the Great Seal of the United States. Barton gave the emphasis to the use of eagle wings, but the Eye of Providence atop a pyramid of thirteen steps was agreed on (13 steps for thirteen colonies?), apparently, due to infuence of Pierre Eugene du Simitiere (c.1736-1784 a Genevan-born artist, philosopher, naturalist, the artistic consultant for the Great Seal of the United States. and was eager to use the Eye of Providence, and he also suggested the motto, E Pluribus Unum [Out of Many, One]), Du Simitiere, who had used it for the work of the first committee on great seal. Hopkinson lifted the design idea for his 1778 idea for the Continental Currency. Wikipedia on du Simitiere isthat ) From New Jersey, Signer of American Declaration of Independence. He once managed a dry good business. His own wikipedia entry. He was a 1761 member of Provisional Cuncil of Pennsylvania Indian Commission re treaty with Delaware and Iroquois tribes. Once appointed customs collector of Salem, New Jersey. He was Treasurer of the Continental Loan office in 1778. http on Hopkison-McKean family of Pennsylvania. American poet and wit.
