Scorgie/Hudgson, p. 26. GEC, Peerage, Pembroke, p. 426. He is later surnamed, or surnamed himself, Montgomery, http by Betty McKernan of Whitall family. For centuries Smyrna was a cosmopolitan place with a large permanent European population. The westerners, from many different countries in W Europe, tended to marry among themselves, and all the families ended up related. The Maltass family went out there from England in the mid-18th cent. Reebkomp almost certainly met Susan Maltass (they married 1791) because he was posted to the area with the Navy (we know the Royal Navy was expanded 1791 because of Russian hostility in the Black Sea, and we know Reebkomp's ship was in the Mediterranean at least as at 1794). Whittall - For the full Whittall family tree see the source below. I only show the parts of this family that descend from Maltass. Whittall family tree by Betty McKernan. This tree confirmed by Smyrna records in [LDS IGI]. Sources yet to be consulted:

Charlton Whittall, born 1791, Liverpool, went to Smyrna (for commerce) 1809, founded C. Whittall and Co., Smyrna, 1811, Mar 1814 to Magdaleine Giraud - [Magdaleine Victoire Blanche, or Magdalene, born 1790], lived in family home, "The Big House", Bournabat (Bornova), nr Smyrna, [formerly an 18th cent. convent, think originally bought by his brother James, who died relatively young], The Big House was a Whittall family home for generations, he and his wife entertained King Otho of Greece there 1833, built the "English church", Bornova 1857 (the Anglican church of St.Mary Magdalene, consecrated 1864), wonder if named after his wife, in 1863 he entertained at his house the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz (reigned 1861-76), The Big House is described as "the country home of Charlton Whittall", i.e. he also had a town house in Smyrna, see [Kalcas, 1983] on the visit, which quotes Spun Yarn by Sir Henry Woods, note [Kalcas, 1983] confuses the deaths of his brother James with that of his son James, had issue: Charlton Arthur Whittall, born 1816, Smyrna, merchant in Smyrna and Constantinople, married Elise Icard, died c.1866 in the Far East, age c.50 yrs, had issue [for more on their descendants see Whittall family tree]: Charlton Howard Whittall, born 1848. Frederick James Whittall, born Smyrna, 1863, mar 1887 to Adela Wilkin [dau of Marmaduke Wilkin and Adela Barker, she must be Adela Wilkin, dau of Marmaduke Edmond Wilkin and Adela ---, bapt 1st June 1864, Stoke, nr Guildford, Surrey [LDS IGI],

- this would look like Marmaduke, brother of Esther Johanna Wilkin, except his wife doesn't match].

Lizette Whittall, born 1864. James Whittall, of "The Big House", Bornova, born 1819, Smyrna. Whittall surname discussion forum says: "The family socialised amongst themselves and cousins ended up marrying cousins. Eventually the family spread out of Turkey and moved all over the world." Augustus Reebkomp (later Montgomery), [descendant of Edward III], illegitimate son of 10th Earl of Pembroke, born 23rd Nov 1762, England, his will 1796 mentions a grant of a coat of arms from the Herald's Office "by which my father the Earl of Pembroke acknowledges me as his son", (todo) see, about as well-documented an illegitimacy as you could imagine, and about as well-accepted by the legitimate family, even Lady Pembroke generously welcomed him at Wilton (though she blocked his adoption of the surname Herbert), he was liked especially by his half-brother George (the future 11th Earl), who had no other brother, money came out of the Herbert family for them for almost a full hundred years, referred to in letters as "Reeb" or "Rep:", educ Eton 1767-71,entered (./sources. html#royal.navy") Royal Navy as child (first record June 1773, age 10), was allowed be present at Wilton during the Royal visit 1778, Apr 1778 (age 15), midshipman, on the Bienfaisant, Mar 1779, midshipman, Europe, Sept 1779, midshipman, Victor, serving with Royal Navy off America as at 1779, his Gibbon descendants said he was on Grand Tour with his half-brother, but this would be temp 1779, he was in Navy, Mar 1780 (age 17), appointed Lieutenant on the Hope, conflict with the newly-independent America, en route from `Charlestown' [a number of possibilities] to New York to join the Hope, he was captured 24th Mar 1780 off `Sandy Hook' [a number of possibilities] by an American privateer, carried into Rhode Island, July 1781 (age 18), appointed Captain of the Ranger, (later the Pigmy), took surname Montgomery on receiving his commission 1781, May 1782, Captain, Buffalo, June 1782, leave, Sept 1782, Captain, Borcas, May 1783, Captain, Concord, Sept 1783, leave (for nearly 5 yrs), May 1788, Captain, Mercury, May 1791, leave (got married, George conceived), mar post-May, 1791 [mar settled by 10th Earl] to Susan Maltass [born est c.1770], Jan 1793, Captain, Inconstant, the 11th Earl Pembroke writes to his mother, Aug 1793, saying that Reebkomp's marriage is not happy: "A Wasps' Nest there very likely is, but I fear she has been herself unsupportable to him, and she is such an execrable fool, that I am inclined to fear there are but small hopes and I have likewise heard enough to make me suspect that her conduct has not always been the most regular in any respect." [Pembroke Papers, vol.II], however, Reebkomp in his will 1796 still refers to "my beloved wife Susan",

As at Apr 1794, Inconstant is in Mediterranean [Steel's list], Jan 1795, Captain, Courageux, June 1795, Captain, Audacious, July 1795, Captain, Bedford, Nov 1795, leave (Elizabeth conceived), May 1796, Captain, Theseus, pron. `Thee-seus', will dated 13th June 1796, written on board the Theseus at sea, died on board his ship the Theseus at Cawsand Bay, Plymouth, 6th Feb 1797, age 34 yrs. This was just one week before the 2nd Battle of Cape St. Vincent off Portugal, 14th Feb 1797 (see guestbook and also here, the first of Nelson's naval victories against the French and Spanish (leading up to the Battle of Trafalgar 1805). After Reebkomp's death, the Theseus came out from England to join the fleet, with the crew a "hotbed of mutiny and intrigue". Nelson made it his flagship, under Capt. Miller, c.Apr-May 1797, and they restored order (Nelson would be Admiral of a fleet of ships). Note there was a later HMS Theseus in the 20th cent. Augustin Henry Saladin Montgomery, not listed on Gibbon family tree, but lists him as sole beneficiary of his mother's will, pr 1853, not mentioned in Reebkomp's will 1796, possibly born after his death?, i.e. born late 1797, presumably should be "Augustus" - after his father the same document refers to his father also as "Augustin".
